Quick answers

The questions almost everyone has

Short, honest answers to what girls search for most.

What age does your first period usually start?

Most girls get their first period between about 10 and 15 years old, often around age 12. Starting a little earlier or later is still perfectly normal — everyone has her own timing.

What are the signs my first period is coming?

The earliest sign is usually breast development, often a year or two ahead. You may also notice new body hair, a growth spurt, and a little clear or whitish discharge in your underwear that often begins six months to a year before your first period.

How long does a first period last?

A period usually lasts three to seven days, and first periods are often light — sometimes just a few spots. For the first year or two, cycles can be irregular as your body settles into its rhythm, and that is completely normal.

What should I use for my first period?

Pads are the easiest place to start. Panty liners work for light days or spotting. Tampons and menstrual cups are options too, whenever you feel ready — there is no rush and no single right choice.
