From Surprise to Sunflower — Why I Created Bloom Buddy
As a husband and the father of two daughters, I began noticing a challenge in our home. Month after month, this natural process seemed to arrive as a surprise. I watched the women I loved schedule homework, events, projects, and responsibilities without an easy way to see where they might be in their cycle. They were not doing anything wrong. They were living in the same culture most of us live in — a culture that rarely teaches people to put menstrual awareness beside the rest of their plans.
I kept thinking that a little preparation could make some days easier. If you know that certain days have often brought lower energy or discomfort, you may be able to keep those days lighter. If your notes show that other days tend to bring energy, confidence, or enthusiasm, you may choose that time for work you care deeply about. That idea became Bloom Buddy.
Bloom Buddy is a simple 28-day visual clock inspired by the growth of a sunflower. You begin the clock on the first day of your period. Then, each day, you open the app and see the flower at a new point in its bloom. The flower is meant to make time visible. Instead of remembering a number or studying a complicated chart, you can glance at the sunflower and see where you are in the app's cycle. Each image is paired with encouraging words and a simple explanation of what may be happening during that part of the cycle.
Bloom Buddy is not meant to tell every woman exactly how she feels. It is an invitation to notice. The 28-day bloom is a friendly reference, while your notes and lived experience tell the more important story. If your cycle is shorter, longer, or irregular, the flower should be treated as a prompt for awareness rather than an exact measurement of your biology.
The daily habit is small
- Start — Begin Bloom Buddy on the first day of your period.
- Glance — Check the sunflower each day to see the cycle's visual progress.
- Notice — Pay attention to energy, sleep, comfort, mood, appetite, and focus.
- Plan — When possible, match your commitments to patterns you have actually observed.
- Adjust — Let your real experience matter more than a prediction.
My hope is that Bloom Buddy replaces surprise with awareness and self-criticism with encouragement. It gives women a simple reason to pause once a day and ask, "Where am I, and what would support me today?" A sunflower does not apologize for changing as it grows. It responds to light, time, and the conditions around it. Bloom Buddy carries the same gentle message: your changing needs are not a problem. They are information. Start on Day One. Check in each day. Notice your pattern. Plan with kindness. And give yourself room to bloom.
